I checked ALL of them | #2 | ||
|
Since my commute begins at 5:00AM, I'd have to admit that I checked ALL of the items, and yes, I did manage to add fenders as an item under
"other." Since I commute in a fixie, I didn't need to be concerned that there was no box for derailleurs - or brakes :-) ... looking forward to
receiving that new waterbottle (the ones I have are getting a little "skunky") and the reflective vest.

Audible Signal | #3 | ||
|
Who doesn't have an audible signal? I yell at drivers all the time. At an intersection, when it is apparent that the driver hasn't seen me, even when
that has caused me to stop as a precaution, I use an "audible signal" to get their attention, and often accompany it with a whole-arm wave.
Hello! See the cyclist?

Audible Signal | #4 | ||

The audible signal is not intended to be heard by automobiles but rather is intended to warn pedestrians that you will be passing them. ...much more civilized
than yelling "On your LEFT!!!!"

Need for audible signal. | #5

Thanks Willie for explaining it. And all along I've been using the arpit sound as my audible signal. It works for the deaf, too. |

Different Audibles for different cultures | #6

Interesting that you should mention this BITS, since in most Spanish speaking countries - including Puerto Rico, they are specific that for "Audible
signals" a whistle or similar device is required and they also are specific to mention that a bell is NOT an acceptable audible device, whereas here in
NJ,as well as the states and (Northern) European countries that require audible devices, they are specific to require a "bell or similar device" and
generally are specific to include in the requirements that whistles and sirens are NOT acceptable audible devices.
I searched the world bicycle regulatory database annd was unable to locate a juristiction that either accepts OR prohibits armpit sounds as an audible signal, although you must be pretty good at it in order meet the volume requirements. |

Audible sounds | #7 | ||

Willie....don't encourage BITS. I'd rather see if he could ring the bell, while it is in his armpit

I never said I used my armpit... | #8
|
...just that I make the armpit sound.
I biked to work Friday, sort of beta testing my route. I am prepped for this week, and the weather looks accommodating, too. |

basket and horn.

Look for me to be riding the Purple People Eater - the fixed gear folder I rode on the longest night, only I've swapped out the 35mm studded Nokians for
25mm 'dillos. I'll also be modeling my new reflective vest which will be useful for my upcoming randonnees.
Due to the way that the folks at HART classify the commute as to "work in a Hunterdon County business or a mass-transit location to begin one's commute" this is the one week where I'll be NOT riding all the way into work, but instead will take it easy and just ride the Columbia Trail down to High Bridge. I'll make up for it with a 400K on Saturday, but for that one I'll be riding Otto. |

Day one report out | #11 | ||

Okay, so who biked in? How far? (Willie, training miles count, but miles sitting on the train do not.) I dd not see Bike Chick's Betty bike on the rack.
Monday I did the 17 miles of hills each way. Tuesday I took it easy, with the 13 mile flat route.

Woke up feeling like crap with a migraine. Thought it might be better to take it a bit easy. I'll try again on Tuesday.

What a Glorious Week!!! | #13
|
After riding through rainstorms EVERY morning for the last two weeks, we were rewarded with beautiful weather for all three days, so far. Although I'm
cutting my commute short as HART requires that I bike to my mass transit departure destination - making it only a 30 mile round trip by bike each day with two
train rides between High Bridge and Westfield "sandwiched in between" I'll be resuming my morning training rides to Linden again next Monday.
The three days so far have been what I longed for on those dark morning commutes from December through March. Without the overcast, I was able to turn off my headlight around 5:30AM and enjoy the sounds of the birds waking up. The moon is its Waning Gibbous phase and while not full, it still is quite visible in the morning. Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing it through a break in the vegetation fully reflected in the calm water of Lake Solitude - coming down the Columbia Trail just entering High Bridge. Although conditions were similar this morning, in one day the earth and moon had changed their position just enough so that the moon's reflection was no longer visible - almost as awesome as witnessing the beginning of the day in the Canadian Rockies - I'll need to post the photos from my bike trip there last summer. |

Weather Can't Be Beat | #14
|
It certainly is tremendous weather. And I've had some work to bike to in the mornings. I crossed paths with a wheelman yesterday morning. I had just
left home and was about to arrive at my workplace less than 3 miles away. It doesn't count as a ride but it's data for the state.
